The liaison role is not to promote research, but family understanding. We've made a commitment to families that their participation in research studies is optional and voluntary, and the RFLs reinforce this message through their consistent relationships with families and by empowering families to be our partners.
~ Dr. Doug Hawkins, attending physician in Hematology/Oncology
Research and family liaisons (RFLs) are a resource for both families and research teams and serve as an advocate for the informed consent process. RFLs help bring family-centered care into the research arena by partnering with families and research teams to ensure families receive the information they need to make an informed decision about participating in a research study.
RFLs also work with the Human Subjects Protection Program (HSPP) and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) to provide a family-centered perspective and consultation regarding study documentation and the presentation of research information to families.
The RFL role focuses on three main areas:
Education
Consultation
Engagement
