Institutional Biosafety Committee

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is a Children's Research Institute committee established for the review and oversight of biological research.

The IBC reports to the President.

The IBC is responsible for:

  • Overseeing the biological safety program at Children's Research Institute facilities
  • Reviewing and approving recombinant deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) research conducted at or sponsored by Children's Research Institute
  • Reviewing research involving potentially biohazardous agents, including but not limited to microorganisms and toxins
  • Adopting policies supporting the safe use of biological materials and the elimination or reduction of exposure to potentially biohazardous agents or materials
  • Conducting investigations of serious violations or problems
  • Setting containment levels as specified in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guidelines
  • Adopting emergency plans covering accidental spills and personnel contamination resulting from research

Membership

IBC members are appointed by the Bio Safety Officer (BSO).
